Ten fearless artists, five inspired pairings, and two weeks to create: Brief Encounters returns for Volume 21 with three nights of thrilling interdisciplinary mash-ups.
For its 21st incarnation, Brief Encounters is heading home to Gastown, to a dynamic venue (Guilt & Co.) located a few blocks away from its original space.
“This is a return to our roots and the neighbourhood whose creative powers sparked Brief Encounters,” said Kristina Lemieux, the artistic producer of the Tomorrow Collective Arts Society, which founded and produces the event. Since its early days in a small Gastown venue dubbed The Office, the series has found success in Mount Pleasant and on Granville Island. “Gastown has grown and evolved a great deal since we were last here, and so has Brief Encounters. We’re excited to be back.”
Since its inception eight years ago, the Brief Encounters series has presented more than 254 artists in 134 pieces. In Brief Encounters, artists from a range of mediums receive only two weeks to work with their assigned partner and hammer out their creative offering. Inspiring, entertaining, sometimes challenging, and always surprising, the Brief Encounters formula has made it a twice-yearly favourite of artists and sold-out crowds alike.
Brief Encounters 21 features Laiwan (Visual Artist), David Newberry (Singer/Songwriter), Madhushani Ramaraju (Spoken Word Artist), Taylor Partel (Beverage Alchemist), Floyd VB (Slam Poet), Nyla Carpentier (Powwow Dancer), Shizuka Kai (Puppeteer), Ralph Escamillan (Contemporary Dance Artist), Marguerite Witvoet (Composer), and Georgina Beaty (Theatre Artist)
The line-up was programmed by David Bloom and the evenings will be hosted by comedian—and previous Brief Encounters collaborator—Riel Hahn.
The pairings will be announced April 24 via press release and the Brief Encounters social media channels.
Brief Encounters 21 will also mark the premiere screenings of two INTERSECTIONS 2014 films. Like original recipe Brief Encounters, this filmmaking initiative—presented with Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society—pairs two creatives from two different artistic genres together to make a moving image work. Films by Kate Kroll (Filmmaker) + Aryo Khakpour (Theatre Artist), and Jessica Han (Filmmaker) + Biliana Velkova (Visual Artist), will screen at Brief Encounters 21.
Brief Encounters 21 runs May 8-10 at Guilt & Co. (1 Alexander Street, Gastown, Vancouver). Doors open at 7:00pm; the show begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20-$35 in advance at briefencounters21.brownpapertickets.com and at the door (cash only). Please note: this is a 19+ event.
