Cell Membrane Structure and Function Worksheet

An introduction to the cell membrane structure and function is essential for any student of biology. The cell is a biological machine with the cell’s own chemical composition consisting of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorous as well as a few waste products. A cell can divide indefinitely and it uses energy (calories) to do so. It functions by sending electrical signals down its internal walls in an attempt to bond with molecules that make up other cells and tissues.

The function of a cell membrane is to keep these chemicals in one place and the signal from the cell’s walls at the top of the membrane so the signal can be passed down through the cell to all other parts of the cell. When the cell divides it is important that the cell membrane is able to do this properly or there could be a malfunction in the cell’s ability to divide and grow.

Cell membrane structure is important because the cell’s outermost wall consists of phospholipids. Phospholipids are essentially a liquid that can dissolve at temperatures below about 40 degrees Celsius. When these phospholipids get to near room temperature, they can turn into a solid which is called lipid. In order for the cell’s membranes to properly dissolve the cell has to be able to create a proper balance of the chemical properties of both the lipid and the solid.

The basic function of cell membranes in the body is to control the process of chemical communication and to provide stability for the cell by keeping the chemical properties of both the liquid and solid separate from one another. This is accomplished through the creation of a membrane by which the liquid and solid molecules can easily pass between the cell’s external membranes. There are three kinds of cell membrane structures: the sheath cell, the fibril cell, and the lipid bilayer cell. Each has a specific function in the cell’s structure and function and each has a different structural design.

The sheath cell is formed when the liquid and solid molecules bind together in the presence of an acidic environment such as water. This prevents the solute from dissolving in the solvent that holds the liquid and allows the lipids to remain in the cell. The membrane in the sheath cell is thin but long enough to be able to effectively contain the liquid and allow it to pass freely through the membrane.

The fibril cell has a thicker and longer cell membrane than the sheath cell and forms when the liquid and solid molecules bind together in the presence of an alkaline environment such as saliva. It is made up of two layers of lipid molecules that are connected to form a long chain which forms a solid sheet when they connect to each other and form a sheet of fibrils. The membrane that separates these chains from one another is thin and long enough to allow the fibrils to pass freely through the cell.

The lipid bilayers are the cell membrane function that maintains the membrane’s thickness and helps maintain a strong connection between the solutes. They have a large surface area and provide a barrier against the solutes. The lipids are responsible for controlling the pH levels of the fluid that surrounds the cells and for providing a neutral environment for the cell and the molecules that make up the cell’s internal machinery. The fibril cells in the cell are responsible for allowing the liquid and solid molecules to mix with one another in order for chemical reactions to occur and for supporting the flow of ions.

All of these three types of cell membrane structures are important for the cell’s function and structure and are the basic functions of the cell membrane. Understanding the different structures and functions is the key to a better understanding of the cell.
