Step 5 AA Worksheet

I’ve been a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over thirty years, and I still get excited when I hear about Steps to Stop drinking, or Step Five for AA. This is one of the more important steps that AA recommends you take. But like most of the other steps, there are steps you can take to speed up this process. So let’s look at Step Five in more detail. First things first…

The first thing you need to do is figure out what your addiction is, so you can figure out what Step Five is. If you’ve tried the medication, or if you’re an addict to alcohol or drugs of some other kind, you might have some hard answers to give. And honestly, you might not even know why you feel like this. But you do, and it IS a problem. So first, write down how long you’ve been a problem drinker (or an addict), and what kind of behavior triggered your transformation. It might help you to keep notes on yourself if you like.

You might even realize that you have a health condition that sets you on a path toward addiction. For example, many diseases have a habit of beginning with small, seemingly imperceptible symptoms – things like stomach aches, headaches, or even occasional irritations like stomach pain or general malaise. And then, as time goes by, the symptoms worsen, until they’re out of control. Then you might find that you feel like alcohol is your drug of choice. And when you stop taking it, things seem to go back to normal.

Other things that might trigger your transformation into an alcoholic are things like divorce, losing a job, or even just a bad day at work. Again, these things might be triggered by life events, or they might have happened even sooner. So on the basis of your own experiences, figure out where you need to take your next step. If it’s something like quitting drinking or quitting smoking, you might want to check out this step.

Step five: Have you figured out what your next move will be? Are you going to go into therapy or see a counselor for alcohol abuse or alcoholism counseling? Or are you going to go to AA meetings or start meeting with other alcoholics in order to find out more about what you can do to get your life back on track? It might be helpful for you to download a sheet like the 5aa, so that you can figure out your next steps in a more clear way.

Step six: Now that you know what your next steps might be, what can you do today to get the work done? Are you going to call a treatment center in your area or search online for some options? Some rehabs offer aftercare too, and there might be support groups as well. You might also think about what you can do on your own to manage your addiction now. Start by keeping a written diary of what you’re doing and how your day is going.

Step seven: Can you see where you are right now in your recovery process? Is your step five goals in sight? Does your plan look achievable or would you like to stretch it out a bit? If you want to stretch out the plan, take a weekend or two and just go off and do whatever you can to make progress. Maybe you’ll have to take more than one route, but that’s okay because it will all be a preparation for your future goals.

You can put all of your options on your step worksheet so that you can keep track of your progress. If you’re still not where you want to be after seven, then you need to push yourself to get there. The reward for completing your plan is knowing that you got somewhere and that you’re fighting addiction. The reward is worth it if you can get there! And the best way for you to get there is by making your own road map to get there!
