The second law then states that if an object has no mass and is being propelled with only a force from some external source, then it will always continue in its motion in a straight line.

By plotting the paths of all the planets at different times and comparing them to the positions of all the stars in the system, students can see that laws of Newton are more likely to be true. Students can also experiment with their own motions by adding and subtracting the proper amounts on their calculators. If they find that their calculators are consistently accurate in depicting the correct positions of all the planets, then they can discount the possibility of the first law of Newton being true, since it would require very great amounts of force on the planets cause the motions of the stars.
