Revising and Editing Worksheets

Editing and revising worksheets are fundamental skills for writers as young as third grade. Students as young as third grade can start to recognize and read mistakes in writing, even if they cannot articulate why they do so. This basic recognition is the key to the successful editing process in the writing department. The best teachers encourage the students to edit and rewrite their own worksheets, rather than forcing them to do it. It is amazing how many students get stuck in what appears to be an easy, or rather correct, work. However, by revising and editing their work, students not only become more skilled writers but also grow as people.

Most students spend eight to ten hours a day reading, thinking, and speaking. Writing is often a lonely job because there is no-one to be asked about what they did wrong, whether it is grammatical syntactical, or content related. If this occurs during class time, then it is more than obvious that the student needs to take a little time to think things over before submitting their assignment. Although, it is important to revise and edit your own work, it can be helpful to give your work the same attention as you give to your friend’s work. For instance, when working on a writing assignment, if you find yourself thinking “this is bad”, then commit the mistake to memory and use your best writing voice to explain your point.

Use good spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules. Avoid the use of jargon and acronyms. These will only cause confusion and delay your writing progress. It is OK for students to use “I” and “you” in sentences that call for personal pronouns. However, they should only use these pronouns where necessary; for example, when referring to a single object in the paragraph.

Write at a normal speed. Use a paper printer for all your writing tasks. When working on editing worksheets, do not edit for punctuation, grammar, and spelling at the same time, as this will slow you down. Instead, edit one sentence at a time so that you do not spend too many hours going on editing sentences.

Distract your mind by using images, metaphors, or vivid stories. If you cannot write a new sentence right away, try making the sentences as short as possible so that you spend less time revising. Also, when using images and stories, make sure that you select the most appropriate ones. For example, you might want to use a photo of an object instead of just a picture of it. In addition, if you cannot write a new sentence at the start of a passage, try using shorter words to introduce points that make up the main body of the passage.

Do not use “I” whenever you do not mean it. It is OK to use “I” occasionally, but it is a bad idea to use it all the time. Instead, type only where necessary or use words like “we,” “us,”, and “our.” Use fewer punctuation marks in each sentence and avoid all those commas, periods, and quotes. These are not advisable because they will take away from the clarity of your writing.

If you have been using an editing software for a while, there is a possibility that the software has made mistakes. You do not need to be a professional writer to type mistakes. You can simply copy from a piece of paper or paste from a website that shows similar spelling and grammatical errors. As a result, you will learn how to use words properly, which you can then practice on your revision worksheets.

Finally, read your worksheets aloud. It is not enough to simply glance through the passages and spot the problems. You should look for them carefully and try to find them again. You can start from the very beginning of the passage until the end of it. After doing this for a while, you will have the chance to perfect your reading skills and learn how to revise without reading the entire passage.
