When it comes to emergency preparedness, having an emergency preparedness worksheet is extremely important. What does this even mean you ask? Does it have anything to do with being an emergency planner or a survivalist? Not really, but that’s what I thought. In my mind, this worksheet is a tool used to assess your preparedness for disaster, emergency, and disaster preparation. Here’s how it works.

There are four elements in my opinion to judge your emergency preparedness. These are: emergency contacts (which can be local or international), a working-evacuation plan, water safety and protection, and personal protection. Once you’ve completed these steps, put your list into order from least prepared to most prepared. This is important because you want to be as prepared as possible to survive and adapt to emergency situations. I recommend starting at the top of your list and working your way down.
Now, here’s where I break the list into categories. The first category is emergency contacts. This should include anyone within your immediate family who is considered a direct contact for you, such as your spouse, children, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. Also, if you have any non-family members at home, they should also be on your list. In my opinion, the longer someone is gone, the more important their role is in emergency preparedness.

The next item on the list is an emergency water supply kit. If you know any place that you can get water (a lake, stream, or other body of water) for an emergency, place it on your emergency preparedness list. Make sure that you also include instructions on how to purify water as well so that no one becomes dehydrated. You also want to place a sealed water container in your vehicle trunk or in your car trunk if you can.
The third category is supplies for home emergencies. Obviously you should have a stocked first aid kit. Place it in a location that you can easily see. I prefer to put it under my desk so that it’s readily accessible. I don’t want it sitting in my purse, lying in my night stand, or anywhere else where I can’t see it and grab it quickly.

Other items are very important such as flashlights (important if you need to run into a dark area to find water), blankets, toiletries, and candles. I’ve also included some items for disaster preparedness like food bars or other dried foods like powdered milk. I buy these at regular grocers because I can freeze them and store them. Freeze dried food has a shelf life of up to three years.
Finally, my fourth category is other disaster/emergency supplies that I have included a generator in case of a power outage, a second-aid kit, and waterproof matches or fire starters. I keep one keychain box with each of these supplies for easy access. I keep an extra box in my car for emergencies. I’ve even accumulated a small toolbox with pliers, wire cutters, screw drivers, and soldering irons in it. I can’t imagine what a disaster could happen that would necessitate this box. It just makes sense to be prepared.
