Another way you can work with your children to understand the play is to use the play itself to teach about the conflicts that happened during the play. Do this by telling your children that there were two lovers in the first act of the play, and then when the two lovers eventually married, there were problems. These problems may include jealousy, anger, and wanting to be involved with the opposite sex. Use the play as a lesson about how two lovers cannot work together to solve marital problems.

Tell your children that the two lovers in the first act of the play had only known each other for a short time, and that before the wedding, Juliet had an affair with Romeo. Tell them that Romeo was the friend of Juliet’s mother, and that they fell in love at first sight. Juliet had been waiting for her knight in shining armor since she was five. Use this information to help your children understand how difficult it was for Juliet to let Romeo in her life.

If you want your children to work on the different problem scenarios in the play, use one word or phrase from the play. For example, if your play includes two lovers who are fighting, you might say that Laertes pushed Laertes off a high wall into the woods. Then your children might say, “Romeo took pity on Laertes and sent him home.” Or if there is a scene where Juliet is trying to seduce Romeo, you might say, “In Act II, Mercutio persuades Juliet to leave behind her lover and marry Caesar.”

Children can work on their work in many different ways. You might use a Romeo and Juliet quote, or adapt another play to use the workbook. There are many books available to read that will work well with your play.
