In previous articles, I wrote about the Common Core Standards for Math. These include reading, writing, listening, and coordinating, along with arithmetic. You might be thinking about your seventh-grade mathematics experience. I suggest you stay that way. In this article, I want to suggest some seventh grade core mathematics activities you can do together with your students.

In my experience as a teacher, the most important lesson in every grade is mathematics. It’s so important that I suggest you, as a teacher, spend some time each grade level helping your students understand, develop, and apply mathematics concepts. The Common Core Standards for Math has been adopted by almost all states, so it is a great opportunity for you to get started with a core set of mathematics standards.
It is also a good idea to start teaching the math concepts before moving on to more complex topics. For instance, you can start by teaching your students how to multiply both sides of an equation. Tell them to count from one to twice twenty. After they have repeated this twenty times, show them the multiplication table, and then ask them to find the answer.

As you begin to teach your sixth graders, you will notice that they tend to grasp a lot of math sooner. It is common for younger children to grasp more math sooner, but if your child is older, they may need a bit more time to learn math concepts. If you have not begun to teach mathematics to your young students, now is the perfect time. You can begin to teach them some of the most important lessons in math: subtraction, addition, and multiplication. By beginning to teach these early topics, you will give them a head start in understanding and implementing the common core standards for math.
Another topic that I like to introduce before starting to teach math is how to solve problems in algebra. Algebra is one of the harder topics for children to grasp. You can ease their concerns by beginning to teach them how to use algebra. You can begin by showing them how to solve division problems, by using the division tables found in Algebra I.

When teaching seventh graders, keep in mind that your students do not start learning math the same way as students in other grades. They need a different method. Teaching the topics in the middle of seventh grade will be easier for them, because they are already used to the topics. When beginning the seventh grade, you should choose topics that you know your students are going to be excited about.
Students learn best when they are having fun. Find ways to make learning fun for them. Tell them interesting stories, or play games with them, just like you would with your own children. Explain complex concepts in simple terms, so that they can understand them.

Finally, you should let them develop their own ideas. In seventh grade, it is important that they develop their own mathematical concepts and not simply copy them from another lesson. You can help them do this by giving them problem sets to work on. Make sure they understand the concept behind each problem. Give them the answers, but allow them to come up with their own solutions.
The most effective way to motivate students is to use the process of teaching as a positive reinforcement, as well. If you find a math concept difficult, ask them if they have any questions. If you do not offer an answer right away, they will be motivated to find one that they can answer quickly and correctly.

You can also learn how to teach math to your students by making math fun. Try having a game night once a week. Or have them solve a math problem while you watch television. If you can combine fun and learning, then you will find that you enjoy teaching as much as your students do.
