Harassment can include anything from verbal to physical attacks. No one deserves to be harassed at any time or place. However, there are several identifiable patterns of behavior that allow others to take advantage of you. When you learn what they are, it will be easier for you to take appropriate steps to ensure that your safety and the safety of others are not compromised.

Harassment occurs when someone deliberately makes an uncomfortable situation worse for another person or co-worker. It may take the form of teasing, making fun of a person’s appearance, physical touching, or forcing an employee to “play nice.” You may have had a co-worker who used to tease you about your weight, now she makes fun of your haircut. Or a supervisor once told you about a woman who always got angry at the other employees for no apparent reason. It could be because she felt that you didn’t get her in trouble as fast as she wanted. Even something as simple as a smile can be used to make someone feel inferior and as a result, they will pick at your skin.

While many companies have policies against discrimination, harassment is often allowed. It takes a very bold person to say and do the things that make others feel uncomfortable. If you are working in an office environment that allows harassment, there are plenty of harassment lesson plans in place to help employees deal with it. There are a few key steps you can take to ensure that the next time you’re in a situation where you might be in the cross-roads between two opposing views, you can choose professionalism over being a punching bag.

First, if you think that someone might be harassing you or your co-workers, make it a point to document the incident. Take down the names of the people involved, the details of what happened, and the steps you took to remedy the situation. This documentation can be included in your harassment lesson plans work sheets or as part of your official company personnel handbook.

Second, if you feel that you are being harassed, you need to document any number of things that make you feel uncomfortable. Keep in mind that some forms of harassment are illegal, while others are not. Be sure that you are aware of the laws governing the type of harassment you are being subjected to. Your worksheet for harassment lesson plans should include information about what constitutes harassment, how to report it, and what penalties, if any, may result from false claims of harassment. You should also keep in mind that even if you are reporting harassment, you are still a victim.

Third, you should never approach the situation confrontationally. Approach it from a logical standpoint first, acknowledging that you feel uncomfortable and taking your time to think things through. If you feel that the other person is merely trying to provoke a reaction out of you, there is no reason to escalate the situation. This would only serve to increase the stress level and diminish your chances of resolving the problem. Instead, remain calm and try to understand the person’s feelings. Simply accept their reaction and continue on your way.

Fourth, always be prepared. Make sure that your official company handbook includes information about your rights and the procedures for dealing with harassment. These types of situations often occur at work, so it is best to be knowledgeable about these rights and the legal remedies available. Also be sure that you and the person involved have a signed written statement that describes the nature of the situation and states that you will report the matter to your supervisor.
