It’s time to set boundaries in recovery worksheets. As you know from the articles I have written before, I am a strong believer that people do not become sober overnight. Sure, some get “tipsy” at the end of a hard day and decide they need a hit of something to take the edge off. That’s a common and acceptable reaction for a lot of people in recovery, but if you are thinking of using drugs or alcohol, don’t fall into this trap.

What if you could find areas in your life where you can set healthy boundaries? What if you could say to yourself that next time you won’t use alcohol or drugs, you will call your girlfriends or boyfriends on the phone instead? What if you decided that for three days straight you won’t touch alcohol, food, drugs, etc.? And what if three days in a row you decide to have an intimate relationship with no one?

If you could say this to yourself over again, wouldn’t it be easier? Of course it would. This concept of setting boundaries is an extremely important part of my recovery and maintenance process. I am not talking about punishment, I am talking about being firm and letting myself go. I think this idea of letting go is vitally important. If you could learn to release yourself from your addiction, wouldn’t that be better than reliving the past and putting yourself back into an abusive environment again?

I have been through hellish cycles of drug addiction and now I am officially clean. My 9 days ago when I decided to kick my habit, I made many mistakes. I let myself slide back into old habits. I didn’t set boundaries with my compulsive behaviors and I allowed myself to get further into the hole I had dug myself into.

All of these old habits that you keep while you are dependent on drugs can be unlearned. It just takes some will power and I am convinced that you can do this because you already know how bad your addiction is. This is where my recovery worksheets come into play.

The first thing I did when I was in recovery was to find a program that taught relapse prevention and how to stay clean. From that point on I made sure that every night before I went to bed, I would create a worksheet for the next day. Each time I got up I had to check off which drugs I had taken and each time I slept. Now it is a routine that I go through each day. Over the past several months I have gone through about one-third of my total amount of drugs. Over the past several years many individuals struggling with addiction have asked me if there is anything else they can do to set healthy boundaries and manage their cravings. It is a common question, one that I get all the time. To be honest with you, I have yet to find anything that offers true lasting recovery without going through all of the emotions associated with cravings. So, what other things can you do to set healthy boundaries and manage your cravings? Well the first thing I always suggest is that you create some boundaries in your relationship with those that you love and care about. One very effective way to do this is to create some kind of unbreakable plan of action for yourself and for your loved ones that outline what you are going to do when you find yourself or others in an emotional or embarrassing situation. This worksheet can be used as a guideline or as a road map to creating healthy boundaries within your relationship and life.

These boundaries in the recovery worksheet can also be used outside of your relationship. For instance, one very effective way of setting boundaries with co-workers is to never talk about any personal problems or issues with co-workers without first discussing these issues with your boss. While this may not seem like it is a big deal, this simple act can create a great opportunity for building camaraderie between coworkers. Another simple step that is often overlooked but can be extremely powerful is to set boundaries within your organization. There are many boundaries that can be established within your organization that will serve as a great tool for strengthening relationships.
