The Articles of Confederation and perpetual union was actually the first official written constitution of our great country. The Articles of Confederation served as a document between various states when they were considered to be one entity. The Articles of Confederation established how the federal government was to operate, what the powers of the federal government were, and the boundaries that were necessary for sovereign nationhood. Though the Articles of Confederation was never implemented in detail as written, we do know that it envisioned a much greater United States than the Articles of Magna Carta did.

The Articles of Confederation is composed of nine states. North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey are the original thirteen states. The current six states which were added at the conclusion of the Articles of Confederation are Maryland, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. The six from the original confederates have been combined into what is now commonly known as “the USA” by majority vote.

The Articles of Confederation created the basis for all the political parties that are represented in the United States Congress today. The Articles of Confederation was designed to create a national political structure that would last for over a century. When the Articles of Confederation was first put into effect, it created an economic model for America that was much like what existed in Switzerland. The Articles of Confederation allowed each state to have limited taxation and was designed to protect each state form undue interference from other states.
