High School Vocabulary Worksheets

Looking for high school vocabulary worksheets? I have some suggestions for you. First of all, don’t get hung up on the flash cards. You may think that flashcards will help you learn more quickly, but in fact, they can actually distract you from what you really need to learn, which is grammar. By memorizing word-for-word what you read on the card, you tend to focus your attention away from the grammatical foundation of the sentence.

Now look at the examples in this lesson. Can you tell immediately which word is a prefix, which one is an inflection, and which one describes the object?

If you can’t, look at pictures instead. In this lesson, we’ll look at a few words that really are important parts of speech. Next, notice how difficult it is to learn “time” when we use “time.” “Time” refers to a unit of time – a minute, an hour, a day, etc. But using “time” to describe time-frame objects makes it seem as if those objects don’t have any duration at all. So try to look at the example below: “The dog eats every night.”

“Eats” is a prefix, while’eats’ is a suffix. The word ‘eats’ is a prefix, while’eats’ is a suffix. Notice how much easier it is to learn words with prefixes and suffixes than those without. Try this next: “The boy drinks a lot more water than me.”

“Drinks” is a prefix, while “drinks” is a suffix. Notice how much easier it is to learn words that start with prefixes and suffixes than those that don’t? See what I mean? By learning “the” as a prefix, “the boy” becomes “timmy.” By learning “time” as a suffix, the word “time” becomes “ten.”

You’ll notice that each word has a different definition. You should memorize the definition of each word so that you can look it up on a dictionary or on a website that looks up word definitions. For example, if you look up the word “time” on a dictionary you will see that it means “the present period of time.” If you memorized that definition, you could memorize all the words relating to the concept of time.
