In many schools these worksheets with answer choices where used for many years with very little change. However, a few years ago, after being in the classroom for over 15 years I watched a change in the teaching style. The teacher no longer had worksheets with answer choices. The students were now required to write out their own answers or they would be penalized.

In other words the teacher was asking the group to research something without providing any support or explanation.

This does not sound all that bad. However, what happens when the student has to provide his/her own explanation? When this occurs the worksheets can get quite long. Further, the information may not be all that supportive. When the group eventually completes their work, the teacher may find that the answers do not make much sense and that they may have provided too many answers already.

What is the solution to this? Students are given worksheets that have multiple paragraphs providing multiple statements. For example, the worksheet may read as follows. Jane has been studying for an examination. At the end of the class she has written down that she now understands why John Doe is in trouble.

Now Jane does have an answer for this question. But, how does she know it? She has not used any worksheets to support her answer. Further, she has provided only one answer. Further, she has not explained why she believes that John Doe is in trouble and why she thinks he should consider hiring a law firm. These worksheets provide the additional guidance that is needed to develop a meaningful response.

Many instructors do not use worksheets effectively. They give students the worksheet and then require them to create an explanation for each topic. This not only is not effective but students may simply stop reading.
