Protein Synthesis and Amino Acid Worksheet

Protein Synthesis and Amino Acid Functional Forms Are Interchangeable Protein molecules are the basic building blocks of life. The word ‘protein’ literally means ‘protein.’ The human body, together with all of the other living organisms on earth, utilize protein as the basis of their existence. This protein is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. There are two different ways to derive a protein; through the usage of enzymes and by the use of amino acids.

Enzymes are catalysts which changes one sugar into another, in this case, from glucose to glycogen. One example of an enzyme is alpha-ketoglutarate, commonly abbreviated AAK. Glycogen is a glucose-like substance that is found throughout the human body. Glucose is converted into energy by the enzyme referred to as endorphins. Another type of enzyme that may be of assistance to protein synthesis is an amino acid that is referred to as cysteine, abbreviated as ACG.

Cysteine, or a cysteine amino acid, is actually essential for protein synthesis. It aids in the breaking down of DNA within our cells. In addition, it also assists with the packaging of amino acids for transportation. All amino acids can be broken down and combined under the influence of a cysteine amino acid. Other essential amino acids for protein synthesis are taurine and arginine. There are four sets of amino acids, called the peptide family, in which each is composed of one or two amino acids.

Another way of putting protein synthesis into action is the use of intracellular signaling molecules such as protein kinase. Protein kinase is the enzyme that attaches to the receptors on a receptor cell. When the receptor is activated, the protein is infused into the cell to bring about an effect. This may be in the form of swelling, as in the case of swelling in the joints as a result of injury or inflammation. This protein may also be used to stimulate the synthesis of other proteins, such as collagen, which serves as an important structural component of skin and muscle tissues.

Other ways in which the reaction of protein synthesis may be inhibited is by the use of certain drugs. Drugs such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and clonidine have been found to inhibit protein synthesis. It is believed that these inhibitions occur because the drug acts on the neurotransmitters present at synapses. Synapses are neurons through which neurotransmitters are transmitted. It is believed that if the drug affects the neurotransmitters present at synapses, then it may inhibit the synthesis of protein.

Infection may also inhibit protein synthesis. An example of this is sepsis, a life-threatening infection. As the name suggests, sepsis is a fatal and serious condition caused by an infection from bacteria or viral agents. Since protein is synthesized within the body, it may be affected if the protein synthesis is affected by the presence of infection. This may be the reason as to why athletes are advised not to workout with weights when they are sick.

Another effect of the protein synthesis that may be harmful is the reaction it may have on DNA. DNA is a kind of genetic blueprint that shows whether an individual carries the characteristics of that species. If any alteration occurs to the DNA, the individual may not be able to reproduce and could be classified as a defected organism. These abnormalities could result in either infertility or may even cause death.

The above-mentioned effects of protein synthesis can be either positive or negative. Positive effects, however, should be taken into account whenever possible. A diet rich in protein, and the use of protein supplements, has been found to help people with the synthesis of protein inside the body. However, positive results are not always guaranteed. People who suffer from illnesses like cancer, AIDS, or leukemia are prime candidates for Protein Synthesis Inhibitors.
