A good place to start with getting ideas for a crime-scene activity is a newspaper article about a murder, suicide, or accident. You will find that many times the details will be very similar but the victim and manner of the death will differ greatly. Some newspapers even have pictures of the deceased and the scene of the crime. This gives the forensics professional several ideas to work from.

The newspaper article gives police and other first responders with information that they will need about the case. You can get this information from other police and emergency services sources as well. You should also use this information to write down any key terms that may be important such as “bagged,” “blood”, or “evidence.” You will need to jot down the date and time of the event, the names of the victim, witnesses, and any physical or digital information that you may have on the scene.

You should also get a pen and paper and make notes of important physical or digital information you have gathered. If possible you should take your notes to another piece of paper and use that as a rough draft for your final report. This will help you get ideas of what to do next or where to go. You will find that many times a good digital photo or video camera will make your job easier. If you can send this photo or video to a law enforcement agency or FBI, it will help them get more information.

You will probably have some photos or video taken at the scene. These will most likely be stored by the police department or FBI and will be a valuable source of information later. If you have these photos and videos, you can create poster-board signs with these pictures that you can hang around the area. Another good idea is to use small stickers or stamps to write information or put a plea for help out on.

Many people get help from a local newspaper. Many times they will run an article on crime activity that has happened in the city that day. You may even find a website with a list of recommendations of local attorneys. This is another good resource to use. You will be able to use the same information above to write down the same information.

You can also call your local police department or FBI and see if they have any current listings. Usually they will have a special webpage just for this type of investigation. They will post all the current open investigations that they have. Use this page to post your own listing and use the police store that you found the photos or video from to return a receipt and copy the information.
