Many high school students go through a period of confusion during their career planning years. High school is typically a time of great change, changes that impact all aspects of an individual’s life. Many of these changes occur throughout the teenage years, however some occur much later in life and may not be as easy to adjust to as they were to those of us who entered school much later in life. As a high school student progresses through the various stages of his or her life, it is important to understand how these changes affect you and your future.

Many people will spend much of their high school years working hard to get through their years of schooling. This type of planning usually takes place on the weekends and after school hours. While many of us understand the importance of spending time with friends and family, many of us also know that it is also important to have some type of career planning. The reality is that we may not always be able to determine where we are going to end up five, ten, or even fifteen years from now.
As students enter college and beyond, they will likely make a number of career planning decisions. These decisions will often occur on a weekly basis or even on a daily basis. Even if students have a set schedule for their lives, that schedule may not necessarily follow the course that they would have taken. This is why it is so important for them to develop a plan or “road map” to help them navigate through the many changes that they will experience as they enter college.

If you are a high school student, there are some basic steps you can take to prepare for your upcoming career planning years. One of the first steps is to do as much research as possible about the careers you are interested in. You can do this online, through other students, or by visiting local businesses that cater to high school students. After you have done the research necessary to determine what you want to do, you can then begin the process of applying what you have learned to your own high school career planning.
Once you have some basic information about the career you are interested in, you should also think about what you need to get in order to qualify for that career. For example, if you are interested in getting into the medical field, you will probably need to take at least one Medical College Entrance Exam, pass a Medical Assignment Test, and complete at least one year of pre-med classes. In addition, if you are interested in becoming an aerospace engineer, you will probably need to take math classes, chemistry classes, and perhaps even a test for American History. In short, it is not out of the realm of possibility for a high school student to become a doctor, a lawyer, a mechanic, or even an aerospace engineer!

There are also some additional steps you can take to prepare for your high school career planning years. Students can also choose to participate in a career center or vocational/trade school. This may offer students an opportunity to explore career planning options beyond what they would learn at a traditional four-year university or college.
Career planning should be considered as an integral part of your high school career preparation. After all, the time to start thinking about the career you really want to pursue is while you are still in high school! You can never have too much preparation. This includes both your higher education planning and your career planning.
